The Origin of the Sri Bhimashankar Jyothirlinga

According to a legend, it goes that a demon called Tripurasura had started harassing innocent people after receiving a boon of immortality from Shiva. To kill the demon, Shiva along with his wife Paravati, took the form of Ardhanarishvara, they killed the demon and restored peace on the land. In the memory of this incident, this shrine came into existence.

Understanding the Bhimashankar Temple

The temple is situated at the extreme edge of the Sahyadri mountain range as if the Lord himself is keeping a vigil over the mountains. At an altitude of 1034 feet, it offers a magnificent view of the wilderness spread around the area. The temple has a blend of ancient Indo-Aryan architecture and the modern Nagara style adding up to its grandeur. The huge court spaces, intricate carvings on walls, and colossal pillars are important observations. In the vicinity of the temple, one can find a lot of ponds namely the Mokshakunda Teertha, the Sarava Teerth, the Kusharanya Teertha, and the Jyanakunda.
