The Origin of the Sri Somnath Jyothirlinga

According to the ShivPuran and Nandi Upapuran, Somnath Jyothirlinga is the first among the 12 sacred Jyothirlingas. It is said that Somraj (The Moon God) was cursed of darkness by his father-in-law Daksha. As he lost the power of light, sad-stuck Somraj meditated at the Prabhas Teerth. Pleased with the penance, Bhagwan Somnath (Shiv), blessed him and released the cursed. Thereafter, Somraj, built a golden temple for Bhagwan Somnath.

Understanding the Somanth Temple

Shree Somnath temple is located in the Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat. The temple suffered numerous demolitions and reconstructions in the past owing to invasions by Moghuls and Portuguese. The present intricately carved, honey coloured temple was reconstructed in the Chalukya style of Hindu temple architecture. It was completed in the year 1951 under the able leadership of Shri Vallabhai Patel.

The site of Somnath also holds additional value from ancient times as it witnesses the confluence of three rivers – Kapila, Hiran and Saraswati called the Triveni Sangam.
