The Origin of the Sri Ramanathaswamy Dham Jyothirlinga

The temple’s history is linked with the Hindu epic Ramayana. After the victory over Ravana, Lord Rama headed to Rameshwar while his way back to Ayodhya. To compensate for the sin of assassinating Ravana, a strong Shiva devotee, Sri Rama wanted to worship Lord Shiva. He sought help of Hanuman to get the Shivling from Mount Kailash. Hanuman couldn’t make it in time for the installation. Hence Sri Rama along with Sita made a beautiful linga with sand, and installed the same, named it as Ramalingam. Later, when Hanuman came with the Shivling, that was also installed. Since then, it has been a tradition to worship the Shivlingam before the Ramalingam in the temple.

Understanding the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple

The Rameswaram temple is one of the 4 temples of the Char Dham Yatra (representing the South direction) The temple stands tall in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. The temple is an exquisite example of Dravidian architecture in India. It has 22 teerthams (sacred ponds) bearing holy water which can rinse off all earthly evils from the body. The swarming 120-feet Gopurams adorn the skyline of the Rameswaram island. The striking features of its interior include massive colonnades standing on 5-feet platforms.
