According to the Shiva Purana, there here was a demon called Dushana who built an army and was terrorizing everyone. When the army were coming towards Ujjain, the sages who lived in the nearby forests started praying to Lord Shiva. Instead of running away, the sages continued their worship, as the army approached. This pleased Lord Shiva and he appeared there himself. A fierce battle took place where Lord Shiva killed Dushana and his entire army. A Jyotirlinga appeared in the place where Lord Shiva first appeared. This fierce form is known as Mahakal, the Lord of Death.

The Origin of the Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyothirlinga

Understanding the Mahakaleshwar Temple
As per the history of Mahakaleshwar Temple, Prajapati Brahma himself established the first temple at the site. The coins recovered at Ujjain have the mark of Lord Shiva on them. According to several texts, in the Paramara period, invaders destroyed the temple. Later, Udayaditya and Naravarman rebuilt it. The temple stands tall on the banks of sacred Kshipra River.
The idol in this temple is facing south, unlike all other temples. It is said that only in death one faces south. Since Lord Shiva is represents death here, his idol is Dakshinmukhi or facing south
