Maa Bhramaramba Devi Shrine

According to a legend, Mata Durga is said to have taken the shape of a bee and worshipped Shiva here, and chose this place as her abode. The temple is dedicated to the goddess of bees, Bhramaramba Devi. Here the Goddess Bhramaramba Devi is worshiped in Brahmani Shakti form. The Goddess idol in the temple has eight arms, and she wears a silk sari.

Another legend also states that Mata Parvati accompanied Lord Shiva as Bhramaramba Devi and stays in the hills of Srisailam along with Kartikeyan as a whole family.

It is one of the very few Shrines, which symbolises the Shiva – Shakthi communion where Jyothirlinga of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy is located adjacent to the Shakthi Peeta, making it a powerful pilgrimage.

At Srisailam, the neck of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen.

History of Maa Bhramaramba Devi Temple

The Srisailam temple is rooted in ancient times, with its origins possibly linked to the Satavahana dynasty, who left inscriptions there in the 2nd century AD. The temple was expanded and renovated by later dynasties, including the Chalukyas, Pallavas, and Reddy Kings, who built roads and mandapas. The Vijayanagara dynasty further developed the site, and administrative control transitioned through the Mughals and British before coming under the Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department in 1949.
