According to legend, sage Gautama Rishi once performed a difficult penance in the Brahmagiri Hills to appease Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, pleased with his devotion, appeared before him, danced Tandav Nritya, on the peak of Brahmagiri. As he dashed his jata(hairs), Ganga was frightened and descended from the heavens to the earth. So the divine Godavari River, the Ganga of the South, poured down from the Brahmagiri Hills, blessing the land and bestowing abundance upon it.
